Autism with a Side of Therapy: Our Family's Flavorful Journey

Hey there, fellow autism parents and fabulous readers! Today, I'm serving up a hearty dish of real talk about life in the therapy fast lane. Pull up a chair, grab your favorite comfort food, and let's dig in!

The Main Course: Therapy Extravaganza

Ever since our amazing Cortland hit the tender age of 2, we've been regulars at the therapy buffet. We're talking a smorgasbord of interventions - speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and behavioral therapy. It's like we're collecting therapy sessions like some folks collect stamps!

Our weekly special? Up to four different therapy flavors, each served in a delectable one-hour portion. And here's the twist we've got a mix of home-cooked therapy sessions and clinic takeout!

That's right, folks. Some days, our living room transforms into a therapy playground, with therapists bringing their magic right to our doorstep. Other days, we're zipping off to clinics faster than you can say "sensory integration." It's a therapy appetite that would make even the hungriest of hippos jealous!

The Secret Sauce: Finding Joy in the Journey

Now, I know what you're thinking. "Four therapies a week, both at home and in clinics? That sounds exhausting!" And you're not wrong. But here's the secret ingredient that makes it all worthwhile: watching Cortland grow, learn, and flourish is like witnessing a master chef at work.

Sure, there are days when I feel like I'm juggling flaming spatulas while riding a unicycle. But then Cortland masters a new skill or lights up with pride after a breakthrough… whether it's on our living room floor or in a clinic cubicle – and suddenly, I'm floating on cloud nine (or should I say, soufflé nine?).

Side Dishes: The Unexpected Perks

Let's be real - this therapy life comes with some quirky side effects:

1. **Expert-level scheduling skills**

I can now tetris appointments into our calendar like a Jenga master, balancing home sessions with clinic visits.

2. **Home makeover pro**

I've become an expert at transforming our living space into a therapy zone and back again faster than a cooking show montage.

3. **Car snack connoisseur**

For those clinic days, I've developed a sixth sense for the perfect on-the-go munchies.

4. **Small talk virtuoso**

Whether it's with the mailman who sees our parade of therapists or the clinic receptionist, I can chat about sensory integration with the best of them!

The Cherry on Top: Embracing Our Unique Flavor

Here's the thing, folks. Autism isn't a flaw to be fixed… it's a key ingredient in the complex, beautiful recipe that is Cortland. These therapies, whether they're happening on our couch or in a clinic, aren't about changing who Cortland is. They're about giving them the tools to express their full, authentic self to the world.

So yes, our life might look like a never-ending therapy potluck, served both at home and away. But you know what? I wouldn't trade it for all the neurotypical casseroles in the world.

Dessert: Sweet Words of Wisdom

To all my fellow autism parents out there navigating the therapy buffet:

- Take it one bite at a time.

- Savor the small victories, whether they happen in your kitchen or a clinic room.

- Don't forget to add a heaping spoonful of self-care to your own plate.

Remember, you're not just a parent - you're a superhero with a side of therapist, chauffeur, home-environment engineer, and cheerleader all rolled into one. And trust me, you're doing an amazing job.

So here's to autism, to therapy (both home-cooked and professionally catered), and to the wild, wonderful journey we're on. May your days be filled with progress, your hearts with love, and your therapy spaces (be they living rooms or waiting rooms) with comfy chairs and good Wi-Fi.

Bon appétit, my friends!
