Unapologetically Embracing Autism: Brilliantly Wired: Cortland’s Twice-Exceptional Journey & Why We Must Celebrate Minds Like His

If you’ve been following Unapologetically Embracing Autism, you already know that my goal is to illuminate, celebrate, and honor the full spectrum of autistic experience. Today, I want to share something especially close to my heart: Cortland’s twice-exceptional profile — a story of astonishing strengths interwoven with very real challenges, a profile that often goes unseen, unsupported, or misunderstood.

This is our deep dive into what “twice exceptional” really means, how it shows up in Cortland’s life, and why children like him deserve recognition, tailored support, and celebration.

✨ What Does Twice Exceptional Mean?

The term twice exceptional (2e) refers to individuals who are both:

  1. Exceptionally gifted in one or more domains
    — academic, creative, intellectual, mechanical, musical, or abstract reasoning
    and
  2. Neurodivergent or disabled in a way that creates genuine challenges
    — such as autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, anxiety, or other developmental differences.

In other words, a 2e child’s abilities and struggles coexist, intertwine, and sometimes camouflage each other. Their brilliance can hide their support needs, and their challenges can overshadow their extraordinary talents.

Twice-exceptional kids don’t fit neatly inside educational boxes. Their development is jagged: soaring in some areas, struggling in others. And far too often, the world only notices one half of who they are.

🌟 Cortland: A Mind That Teaches Itself

Cortland is a shining example of twice-exceptionality in action. His mind is wired with a combination of intuition, creativity, logic, and curiosity that defies typical developmental expectations.

Here are just a few of the ways his strengths reveal themselves:

🎶 He Teaches Himself What Others Need Lessons To Learn

Cortland has an extraordinary ability to self-teach.

He can:

  • Learn to play instruments by ear
  • Explore sounds, patterns, and rhythm in ways even seasoned musicians admire
  • Decode and recreate melodies without sheet music or guidance

This is not typical. This is a powerful example of musical giftedness emerging organically, beautifully, and unapologetically.

🎨 He Draws With Vision, Precision, and Imagination

Cortland’s artistic abilities are another window into how his mind processes the world:

  • He creates detailed drawings with depth and intention
  • He captures shape, motion, and emotion effortlessly
  • He consumes visual information like a language he was born fluent in

This isn’t simply “good for his age.” This is exceptional.

🔧 He Fixes and Understands Electronics Without Instruction

Some kids take things apart.

Cortland takes things apart and understands them.

He can:

  • Disassemble electronics
  • Diagnose what’s wrong
  • Reassemble or repurpose components
  • Navigate devices with the intuition of an engineer

This is mechanical intelligence — the kind you can’t teach but can nurture.

🤖 He Deciphers Technology & AI Like a Native Speaker

Many adults are overwhelmed by artificial intelligence.

Cortland? He gets it.

He:

  • Knows how to navigate AI systems
  • Understands patterns in how they respond
  • Tests how they work with curiosity and precision
  • Notices nuances others overlook

This is abstract reasoning and systems thinking — and he’s doing it independently.

💬 But Being 2e Also Means… It’s Not Always Easy

For all the brilliance, twice-exceptional children often face:

  • Sensory challenges
  • Emotional regulation struggles
  • Asynchronous development
  • Difficulty in traditional school settings
  • Being misunderstood or underestimated
  • Adults focusing on their challenges rather than their capabilities
  • Or, just as difficult, adults focusing only on their gifts while ignoring their needs

Cortland is capable of incredible things and he needs support. These truths don’t cancel each other out — they coexist, shape each other, and form who he is.

💛 Why Sharing His Story Matters

Cortland’s profile isn’t just a list of talents; it’s proof of what can happen when we look beyond deficits and see the whole child.

Twice-exceptional kids:

  • Think differently
  • Learn differently
  • Problem-solve differently
  • Experience the world differently
  • And yes — shine differently

But they also need environments that recognize both their brilliance and their struggles.

By sharing Cortland’s journey, we’re doing more than celebrating him.

We’re challenging the narrative.

We’re educating the world.

We’re making space for kids whose minds don’t fit the molds they were handed.

🌈 Cortland’s Story Is Just Beginning

I am endlessly proud of him — not just for what he can do, but for who he is. A deeply curious, wildly intelligent, beautifully unique child whose mind is a constellation of gifts and complexities.

This blog exists for children like him — to honor, uplift, and unapologetically embrace every facet of their neurodivergent brilliance.

And I hope, in sharing his twice-exceptional profile, we help other parents recognize the spark in their own children too.
